That’s something my lab works on – the best way would probably be to replace the cells in the eye that are dying with stem cells, that can develop into light-sensitive cells and restore sight. It isn’t as easy as it sounds because stem cells aren’t easy to work with, they don’t always develop into the right cell type, and there are problems with using embryonic stem cells – which is why most labs prefer to work with adult stem cells which would come from the patient’s own eye. This work is a long way away from being used in the clinic but it’s an exciting field you may want to work in one day 😉
