No, not directly. I have given blood, but I don’t know if it actually saved someone’s life. I’ve also escorted many lost people down off the mountains over the years, so I like to think I’ve averted some disasters there.

Ultimately though, I would like to think that something I identify in my work will contribute to saving lives or reducing suffering.

When I was about 15 I had to perform CPR on my next-door neighbour who was suffering what turned out to be a pulmonary embolism – scary, but it made me really glad I’d just done a St John’s Ambulance first aid course!!

      Hi deanhl01,

Not directly… Like Jim I give blood: as regularly as possible because my wife needed lots when our kids were born – I still owe the NHS many pints, but she would not be here today without it!

As I am terrified of needles (silly for a scientist but…) this is a bit of a challenge, but I am getting better, and it really does save lives.

No but if the scenario ever presented itself I’d like to think I’d be brave enough to step up and help someone. And who knows, maybe one day one of the molecules I work on will end up helping to save many people’s lives. Stay tuned..

No, I’d love to say I have but I haven’t 🙁 I’ve helped various people when they’ve fallen off their horses, dislocated their shoulders etc but never saved a life.

I’m not sure if my current work would save lives, but it’s sometimes difficult to know every application of your work. Maybe one day I could do some really important research that will go on to help save lives, that’s the scientist dream 😉
