No thank goodness, I’m always worried (because I’m a bit clumsy) that I’m going to break something expensive but fortunately it hasn’t happened yet.

Although I’ve known people who have had some minor accidents….that may have lead to big explosions….fortunately no-one was hurt. It’s really important to be as safe as possible I make sure you know the risks of your work before you do it as some of the things we work with can be a bit dangerous!

Hmmm – well it wasn’t that bad, but when I was a PhD student I was doing an experiment with a piece of apparatus that had a very high voltage (~2000V DC) electrical supply. Unfortunately the equipment was damaged and it started sparking and there was a little smoke and a bad smell…

Fortunatley I was still in the lab and quickly turned it off before too much damage was done… That taught me the valuable lesson of always checking and testing your equipment before doing an experiment, so I guess it was useful!
