I get paid a salary each month, and it’s certainly a lot more than I got as a student when I was training to be a scientist. But saries tend to vary depending on what type of science business you work for (government, big industry, university), and where you live. Whilst we don’t get paid as much as bankers or other financial professions (or even scientists doing the same type of work in other European countries), it’s more than enough for my needs 😉
I’m a PhD student which means for the amount of hours I put in we get paid peanuts.. but as I have mentioned in some of my other posts I certainly don’t do this for the dinero. I love it and I have fun doing it. As a result of my dedication to science I have been incredibly fortunate to receive several scholarships covering my college, master’s and PhD career. I also get to travel (for free) all over to attend conferences so there’s definitely a lot of perks to being a scientist.
If you find you enjoy science, then you should definitely explore your interest by continuing to study it. There are so many different areas, and you really need to study the subject for a while to discover the areas that most interest you – there’s a lot more out there than you can ever cover in school science lessons 😉
Whilst a working scientist can have a perfectly ok salary, often the hours are very long, and so you might think that it is a lot of work given the amount you are paid. However, it doesn’t really feel like that to me. I love coming to work and doing something quite different every day. I get to design my own experiments and plan my own day. It really is like a hobby, but I get paid for doing it.
So go into science if you find you have a passion for it, but don’t do it just for the money – it’s better than a boring job that pays loads 😉
