Well I only have one sibling, my sister, who is 18 years older than me! She lives in London and is an accountant, so quite different from a scientist. As far as I know neither her, my dad or my mum have ever had any interest in science so not sure where I got the science bug from. In fact my mum horrified me at the weekend when she announced that she thought DNA wasn’t a real physical thing. I’m not sure what she thought it was…bit scary lol!
I have two sisters and neither of them are scientists… it gives me a good audience to explain what I have been researching, when I go back to the southwest to visit my family!
My younger sister also has a PhD, except hers is in zoology, and she works at the University of Melbourne, in Australia. She researches the interaction between native Australian micro-bats (very small bats, not unlike those we see in the UK) and the man-made environment of the city (how do they adapt to buildings rather than trees – and how can we protect them). You can read a newspaper article about some of her work here: http://www.theage.com.au/national/the-secret-life-of-microbats-to-be-revealed-20091209-kk2d.html
