that’s what I’m working towards, using gene therapy to fix cells in the eye that don’t work properly – and my research group has a clinical trial where we’re testing a treatment for one form of blindness that causes young children to lose their sight. So far there are promising results, and we’re looking to treat other forms of inherited blindness – and also diseases that cause older people to go blind too.

People lose their sight for so many different reasons, it’s unlikely that one treatment would work for all patients, but scientists across the world are working on many different forms. Something that’s really exciting is the potential use of stem cells to replace dying cells in the eye – we’ve made a lot of progress in this in our lab and elsewhere, so there is real promise!
