      again excellent question. A virus is like a ball of protein that carries DNA – this DNA is a set of instructions to make more of the virus protein, so when a virus infects a cell (like when you get the flu and the influenza virus gets inside your lung cells) it forces the cell to make thousands more copies of itself. We modify the virus so that it still has the ball of protein (this is what allows the virus to enter cells) but we change it to deliver the DNA that we want to send to a cell.
