Hmm, the furthest country I’ve ever travelled to is Australia. I went to a city in the South of Australia called Melbourne to visit my sister who works at the university there. My sister is also a scientist, but she studies bats and other animals that have made the city their home.

I’ve not really done that much travelling, the furthest I’ve been is probably Italy. I’ve been there a few times, I love the food and the culture. I’d really love to go on a cruise down the Nile and see all the pyramids and tombs. My mum went not so long ago and she managed to fall down a tomb in the dark. I think everyone was pretty scared to hear this scream in the dark! My nephews who are 9 and 11 now call her “screaming donkey” as the tomb was discovered when a man’s donkey fell through the sand into the undiscovered tomb!

The furthest I have ever been was in my gap year between University and starting my PhD – I went to Australia, as part of an around the world trip…

While I was in Australia I learned to scubadive on the Great Barrier Reef, which was awesome… (except that everybody on the boat was so seasick that the best place to be was in the water!)

I’d go back to Australia anytime and am always looking out for scientific conference there… I also have a set of distant relatives there who we worked with to study the genetics of our family (the Badge family is rather small and widely spread)… Turns out the genetics says we are related but nobody has any geneological records of a Badge traveling to Australia… its a bit of mystery!

I grew up in a small town outside of Boston MA and had never really left until “science” happened. I am so grateful but as a result of my dedication to science I have been incredibly fortunate to travel all over the place (Singapore, Thailand, India, Europe, everywhere in the USA) to present my work or conduct experiments! Now I’m addicted to traveling.

Gotta be Borneo, in Malaysia – took ages to get there, well worth the travel though! That was a holiday, but travelling every now and again is one of the great things about being involved in science – you get to see other parts of the world for work, meet interesting people, discuss your work with them – a win-win!
