      Actually, meteor showers are quite frequent, and I watch several meteor showers a year from my back garden (mainly the Perseids and the Leonids). The showers can be seen in different parts of the night sky at different times of years. Sometimes they are best viewed in other parts of the world, but generally the daily news (even the news on children’s TV) should let you know when the next one is happening.
