I always wanted to be a vet since I was really little.

I even went to vet school! But I really didn’t like living in london, I’m more of a countryside person than a city person. So when I left I really didn’t know what I wanted to do (bit scary). I went to study biology because I always liked it at school but had no idea I’d go on to be a scientist. Actually I still don’t think I see myself as being a scientist! I feel more like I’m still a student. Maybe when I get a job as a scientist then I’ll feel like one.

Actually, I wanted to be an archaeologist all the way through school. I had a fascination with history, but I wanted to get out into the field, dig up ancient surfaces and find ancient artefacts, but in a systematic scientific manner that allows us to answer specific questions about ancient peoples. I’m still fascinated by archaeology and volunteer on digs to this day. So I always knew I would be a scientist one day, but if you’d told me when I was 12 that I would grow up to be a bacterial geneticist, I would have laughed – and then probably asked what on earth one of those is!

When I was quite young I wanted to be a pilot… too much time reading Biggles books! Turns out that I am bit colourblind (which is genetic) so couldn’t do that!

Then again I’ve always been interested in how things work – my dad used to fix cars and I helped a bit… Once I’d worked out how the car braked and turned I wanted to know how everything worked, including animals so that got me interested in biology… and now I am a scientist!

Since the 7th grade I’ve been saying I want to be a scientist- no idea where I first heard that word but it stuck. I was your typical over-achiever and did well in school. However, science class I always found exciting and I didn’t mind doing the work, it was actually fun. And now that’s my life. I also had aspirations of being a professional soccer player (sorry football to you guys) and I used to day dream about being a fashion designer too. I play “football” with my friends for fun and just to give it a go I also recently started my own fashion company- Lizzard Fashion- where I get to be a scientist and a fashion designer!

I wanted to be a scientist from a pretty young age, although I’d have been just as happy being a science journalist – I remember wanting to be the presenter on a programme called Tomorrow’s World (ask your parents, I’m showing my age now :-))…
